Here, the author tells the personal history of women that drove the womens' rights movement in the United States and those who opposed them. And, the author jumped around in time too much. The peripheral characters in Sex Wars are a "Who's Who" of the movers and shakers of the period. It jumps to and then to and back up a bit to so not only do you have to keep track of who is who, but also what year they are in. A successful historical novelist should be able to create characters whose cultural codes of conduct and way of life differ markedly from the norms of the contemporary world while at the same time illuminating the similar struggles people have faced throughout the ages.
